Suburban Mayor Criticizes Buenos Aires Transport Fare Hike

The mayor of Esteban Echeverría, Fernando Gray, publicly questioned the increase in motor vehicles circulating exclusively within the City of Buenos Aires and warned of its impact on workers from the suburbs. According to information from the Argentine News Agency, Gray stated that a person traveling daily from AMBA to CABA would have to pay 1,651 pesos just for rides on Buenos Aires buses (round trip), which, projected over 20 business days, amounts to 33,019 pesos per month. The mayor added a reference salary data: with a Minimum, Vital, and Mobile Salary of 341,000 pesos, that expense represents 9.6% of the monthly income, not counting trains or other combinations to complete the journey. Additionally, he warned about the update scheme: after an initial increase, the system would incorporate monthly automatic raises combining a fixed adjustment and an IPC update, which, as presented, could move the increases in a range of 8.4% to 11.1%. Gray's intervention is framed in the political discussion about the distribution of mobility costs between jurisdictions and the effect on the wallets of those who work in CABA but live in the Buenos Aires suburbs.
